An ancient bronze coin from Gela, on the south coast of Sicily, set flush in a smooth domed bezel and fixed into a curb link chain. The necklace runs 17 inches.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe coin dates to the 5th century BC, when Gela was one of the richest Greek cities on the island. It’s small and dark, worn soft by a few thousand years of hands and soil, and the head on its face is still there if you tilt it toward the light. No two of these are alike. Each was struck by hand, so each came out a little off-center and a little out of round, and Bvlgari cut the bezel to fit this one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTurn it over and the back of the frame is engraved with where the coin came from and when: SICILIA, GELAS, 5th cent BC. Every Monete piece carries that inscription.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe chain is heavy, flat-polished curb link, and it joins the bezel directly at both sides. There’s no bail, so the coin stays centered and facing forward.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBvlgari started setting ancient coins in gold in the 1960s, and it became one of the house’s signatures.
