About Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Alhambra Carnelian 20 Motif Necklace

Carnelian has been cut for jewelry since antiquity. Roman signet rings were carved from it because hot wax wouldn't stick to the surface. VCA uses it for a different reason: the color. It's a warm, saturated red-orange that reads as red indoors and catches fire in daylight, and across twenty motifs it makes a full ring of color at the neck and down the front.

Each clover is cut flat, polished to a soft gloss and set inside a border of gold beads. Short runs of cable chain separate them, so the necklace drapes instead of hanging stiff. At 33 inches it can go on long over a knit or doubled into two rows.

Van Cleef and Arpels Backstory

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels brothers — Charles, Julien, and Louis — sons of jeweler Salomon Arpels. The maison's Place Vendôme address remains its headquarters more than a century later.

In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented the Mystery Set, an invisible setting technique in which precious stones are mounted with no visible prongs or metalwork between them. The technique requires hundreds of hours per piece and is still used today on the maison's most important high jewelry.

Across collections like Alhambra, Perlée, and Frivole, Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French jewelry.
