Pomellato Tourmaline Pink Sapphire Rose Gold Cocktail Ring Sz 6

A cabochon this size doesn't ask permission.

The center stone is a tourmaline, cut as a high oval cabochon and polished to a wet, almost liquid surface. Color runs deep pinkish-red — closer to garnet-red under warm light, brighter and pinker in daylight. Look through the dome from the side and you'll find natural color zoning, a band of dark brownish-red sweeping across one edge. That's the stone telling you it grew in the ground rather than a lab. Tourmaline does this. The good cutters orient the rough to let it show instead of hiding it.

Four broad claws grip the stone, and every one of them is pavé-set with round pink sapphires. So is the collar wrapping the base of the cabochon. So are the shoulders, where three rows of sapphires run down each side of the shank before the setting releases into polished 18k rose gold at the back.

Here's the detail that makes it work: black rhodium is applied over the rose gold throughout the pavé sections. Darkened metal, pink stones. The contrast pushes the sapphires forward instead of letting them dissolve into a warm gold background — the same trick that makes Pomellato's burnished settings read the way they do.
