About Van Cleef & Arpels Magic Alhambra Long Necklace Malachite in 18k Yellow Gold

The Magic Alhambra long necklace, reference VCARO3MG00 — a single oversized four-leaf motif in banded green malachite, ringed by the beaded gold border that identifies every Alhambra piece. The motif runs about 26mm across, roughly two and a half times a Vintage Alhambra clover. That scale is the entire point of the Magic line.

Malachite is why this one is worth chasing. Each slice is cut from a different section of the stone, so the concentric green banding is unique to the piece — the pattern on this motif exists nowhere else. Some read dark and dense, some pale and swirling. This one banks toward deep forest green with tight rings.

The chain is 18k yellow gold at 90cm, just over 35 inches, finished with VCA's hallmark clasp. It's built to work two ways: long and swinging on a single pass, or doubled for a shorter layered length. Same necklace, two entirely different looks.

Van Cleef and Arpels Backstory

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels brothers — Charles, Julien, and Louis — sons of jeweler Salomon Arpels. The maison's Place Vendôme address remains its headquarters more than a century later.

In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented the Mystery Set, an invisible setting technique in which precious stones are mounted with no visible prongs or metalwork between them. The technique requires hundreds of hours per piece and is still used today on the maison's most important high jewelry.

Across collections like Alhambra, Perlée, and Frivole, Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French jewelry.
