About Van Cleef & Arpels Pure Alhambra Mother of Pearl Sautoir Necklace 18k Yellow Gold

The Alhambra, stripped to its essence. Van Cleef & Arpels' Pure Alhambra sautoir in 18k yellow gold — a long chain stationed with mother-of-pearl clover motifs, each one framed in smooth polished gold rather than the beaded edge of the Vintage line. That's the Pure signature: the quatrefoil reduced to clean silhouette and luminous shell, nothing else.

The mother-of-pearl shifts from cream to soft iridescent pink as it moves, and the sautoir length gives the piece range — worn long over knits, doubled at the collarbone, layered against other Alhambra chains. The hidden slide clasp keeps the line of motifs unbroken. Understated at a glance, unmistakable to anyone who knows the Maison.

The necklace measures 32" in length

Van Cleef and Arpels Backstory

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels brothers — Charles, Julien, and Louis — sons of jeweler Salomon Arpels. The maison's Place Vendôme address remains its headquarters more than a century later.

In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented the Mystery Set, an invisible setting technique in which precious stones are mounted with no visible prongs or metalwork between them. The technique requires hundreds of hours per piece and is still used today on the maison's most important high jewelry.

Across collections like Alhambra, Perlée, and Frivole, Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French jewelry.
