About Van Cleef & Arpels Vintage Alhambra Ring 18K Yellow Gold White Mother-of-Pearl Diamond

A single Vintage Alhambra clover in 18K yellow gold, the white mother-of-pearl set inside the beaded gold border with a round brilliant diamond bezel-set at the center. Mother-of-pearl never looks the same twice — warm gold one moment, cool silver the next, a soft shift of light across the clover depending on how it catches the day.

The tell is the band. This is an older French vintage production, and instead of the smooth polished shank on current Alhambra rings, it's built on a twisted rope shank — a cabled, ropework band that splits and frames the motif. Van Cleef moved away from this construction years ago, so it's a quick way to place the ring's era and set it apart from what's in the boutique today.

It carries its age well. The gold has a warm patina across the shank, the kind of soft, lived-in glow that only comes with time on a piece and can't be faked on new production. Character, not wear — it reads as exactly what it is, a vintage French Alhambra with history in it.

Van Cleef and Arpels Backstory

Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in Paris in 1906 by Alfred Van Cleef and the Arpels brothers — Charles, Julien, and Louis — sons of jeweler Salomon Arpels. The maison's Place Vendôme address remains its headquarters more than a century later.

In 1933, Van Cleef & Arpels patented the Mystery Set, an invisible setting technique in which precious stones are mounted with no visible prongs or metalwork between them. The technique requires hundreds of hours per piece and is still used today on the maison's most important high jewelry.

Across collections like Alhambra, Perlée, and Frivole, Van Cleef & Arpels remains one of the most distinctive voices in twentieth-century French jewelry.
